Essential Oils

Ayurveda, the 5000-year-old "Science of Life" from India, offers a profound, holistic approach to wellness by balancing the mind, body and srit. A key component of this system is the use of essential oils, or Sugandh Dravya, which act as potent therapeutic tools to address dosha imbalances and support holistic health, vitality (Ojas) and life force (Prana)

Here is an overview of Ayurveda and holistic essential oil, including how they are used to balance the three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

The Foundation: Ayurvedic Aromatherapy

Ayurvedic aromatherapy uses the energetic qualities of essential oils to restore equilibrium. Unlike modern aromatherapy which often focuses only on scent. Ayurveda classifies oils by their effect on doshas and their Rasa (Taste), Virya (heating/cooling energy) and Vipaka (post digestive effect)

  • Vata (Air & Ether): Governs movement. Impbalances lead to anxiety, dry skin and insomnia.                                                      Oils: Warm, heavy, grounding and sweet (e.g., Lavender, Frankincense, vetiver, Patchouli).
  • Pitta (Fire & Water): Governs metabolism, imbalances lead to anger, inflamation and skin issues.                                                 Oils: Cooling, sweet and calming (e.g., Sandalwood, Rose, Jasmine, Peppermint, Fennel).
  • Kapha (Earth & Water): Governs structure. Imbalances lead to lethargy, congestion and weight gain.                                                  Oils: Warm, stimulating and spicy (e.g., Eucalyptus, Ginger, Rosemary, Clove Bergamont).

Popular Ayurvedic Essential Oils

  • Sandalwood (Chandan): A premier Pitta-pacifier, it is calming, cooling and used to promote meditation.
  • Neem: Highly purifying and bitter, ideal for treating Pitta and Kapha skin issues.
  • Tulsi (Holy Basil): An adaptogen that boosts immunity and balances Vata and Kapha.
  • Vetiver: Deeply grounding and cooling, used for calming anxiety and reducing heat.
